Research update — August 19, 2026: River announced its seed after this article’s July filing date. We updated the profile while preserving the requested archive date.

Prediction markets are becoming a professional trading category, and fragmented liquidity creates the same problem seen across crypto exchanges: traders need one screen, one API and smarter order routing.

River Markets aggregates Kalshi, Polymarket and Polymarket US into an execution, data and position-management stack. Its $8.5 million seed is a bet that the winning opportunity may be the tooling around prediction venues rather than any single market.

Why the seed matters

River announced the round on August 9, 2026. Haun Ventures led. Y Combinator, Coinbase Ventures, Qube Research & Technologies, Kima Ventures, Cherry Ventures and a long group of trading firms, funds and operators participated.

For a two-person YC Spring 2026 company, $8.5 million is meaningful. It funds integrations, reliability and compliance work in a market where a broken order router can cost users immediately.

What River Markets does

River combines venue data, order entry, positions, profit and loss, an order-management system and APIs. A trader can compare event-contract prices across venues and route orders without rebuilding each integration.

River sometimes uses “prime brokerage” shorthand. Its own FAQ makes the current boundary clearer: funds remain in customer-controlled venue accounts, while margin, custody and cross-venue netting are not yet the core live product. Today River is closer to an execution and data layer than a traditional prime broker.

What is live today

River says it launched with trading teams on May 1, 2026 and serves several top-ten traders by volume across Kalshi and Polymarket. Its Y Combinator profile reports more than $50 million traded and three top-ten traders.

Those are company-supplied claims, not audited venue statements. River also claims its smart routing improves execution by roughly two cents on average. That is plausible in fragmented markets, but users should test fills against venue-native prices and fees.

Who founded River Markets

Oscar Levy, co-founder and CEO, previously built models trading $6 billion at BlackRock and studied financial engineering at UC Berkeley. Antonin Parrot, co-founder and CTO, previously built high-frequency options strategies at Valkyrie. The stable YC company page identifies both founders and their backgrounds.

The tiny team is part of the attraction and the risk: deep quantitative experience, but limited operational redundancy.

Who funded River Markets

Haun Ventures led, bringing crypto and regulation experience. Y Combinator backed the company at formation. Coinbase Ventures adds exchange infrastructure context. Qube Research & Technologies is a quantitative operator rather than a general-purpose VC.

The investor mix shows prediction markets converging with professional trading technology.

Token status

River has not announced a native token, TGE or contract. Users trade event contracts at third-party venues. Equity financing provides no retail claim on a future River token.

Main risks

  • Regulatory risk: venue access and event contracts differ by jurisdiction.
  • Venue dependency: APIs, permissions, liquidity and solvency sit outside River.
  • Execution risk: routing errors or stale data can directly affect fills.
  • Product-label risk: current functionality does not yet equal full prime brokerage.
  • Team risk: a two-person company has limited redundancy.
  • Traction verification: volume and ranking claims are unaudited.

Bottom line

River is a credible early trading-infrastructure startup with founders who understand quantitative execution and a strong seed syndicate. It is not DeFi in the strict sense, but it sits inside the wider crypto market-structure narrative.

The interesting bet is that prediction markets become large enough to need institutional tooling. The current product is real; the “prime” layer and durable volume are still being built.
