Cycles: The $6.4M Bet on Private Clearing

A loop of obligations being netted into one smaller settlement by Cycles

Research update — August 19, 2026: This profile is filed to July so it does not displace current breaking news. Product status and corporate identity were checked on the modified date.

Cycles is reviving an old financial idea with modern privacy technology: if several businesses owe each other money, find the loops, cancel matching obligations and settle only the remainder.

That can reduce the cash or stablecoins trapped in gross settlement. The difficult part is not the arithmetic. It is persuading enough counterparties to join the same network and proving the calculation without revealing sensitive obligations.

Why the $6.4 million seed matters

Cycles announced $8.7 million in total funding in May 2026. The new $6.4 million seed was led by Blockchange Ventures, with Coinbase Ventures, Compound VC, Primitive Ventures and angels. A prior $2.3 million pre-seed was co-led by CMCC Global and Maven 11.

The round is small beside the mega-financings in this list, but appropriate for a technical network still proving institutional workflows.

What Cycles does in plain English

Imagine A owes B, B owes C and C owes A. If those obligations are compatible, a clearing system can offset the loop so only the net difference requires settlement. Cycles applies that logic across a network while using privacy technology to avoid publishing every position.

Cycles Prime targets institutions with privacy-preserving netting. Cycles Pay applies shielded stablecoin payments, invoicing and treasury tools to businesses. The whitepaper describes the mechanism in more detail.

“No collateral” or “no escrow” does not mean no risk. The underlying obligation can still default; netting only changes how much liquidity must move.

What is live today

Cycles announced Lynq and FalconX as anchor partners for Prime and was recruiting firms into beta. Pay exposes stablecoin payment and treasury features with some business functions in private beta.

That is early validation, not a mature clearing network. No audited live netting volume was disclosed. The project does publish its Swiss legal entity and address, and its technical paper is public.

Who founded Cycles

Ethan Buchman, co-founder and CEO, previously co-founded Cosmos and Tendermint and founded Informal Systems, where Cycles was incubated. Tomaž Fleischman, co-founder and principal scientist, has a long research history in obligation clearing and liquidity-saving systems.

The whitepaper has additional technical authors. We do not automatically turn every paper co-author into a corporate founder.

Who funded Cycles

Blockchange Ventures led the seed. Coinbase Ventures brings exchange and distribution context. Compound VC and Primitive Ventures are early-stage investors comfortable with frontier coordination and cryptoeconomic systems.

The shared thesis is that settlement efficiency is a network problem. Venture capital can fund the software, but only counterparties can create the network effect.

Token status

Cycles has not announced a native token, TGE, allocation or contract. The whitepaper discusses stablecoins and crypto assets as settlement liquidity; that is not evidence of a Cycles investment token.

Main risks

  • Cold-start risk: the system becomes more useful only as multiple institutions participate.
  • Counterparty risk: netting does not erase the obligations underneath.
  • Privacy complexity: zero-knowledge proofs and trusted execution environments expand the security surface.
  • Beta risk: both institutional and business products remain early.
  • Yield dependency: optional savings features depend on external providers and protocols.

Bottom line

Cycles is a legitimate, research-backed attempt to improve settlement efficiency. It fits the stablecoin narrative at a deeper layer than wallets or payment buttons: using programmable money to reduce working-capital needs.

The investment case is still private and early. There is no announced token, no audited production volume and no guarantee that institutions will coordinate on one network.
