Enigma ENG status in 2026
Enigma ENG is a legacy Ethereum token, not the current token of Secret Network. Enigma MPC stopped supporting the Enigma Protocol and Enigma Network at the beginning of 2020. Secret Network launched in February 2020 with a different native coin, SCRT, and the community-run ENG-to-SCRT burn swap closed in January 2021.

The original Enigma website, blog and Catalyst PDF domains no longer resolve. Links to them have therefore been deactivated in the archived 2017 copy below. Do not use a lookalike Enigma or ENG “migration” website: there is no open official swap to recover today.
What happened to Enigma and ENG?
Enigma began as a privacy-focused computation and data-marketplace project. Its 2017 plan combined Catalyst, a digital-asset strategy-testing application, with a future marketplace where users could buy data using ENG. Enigma later shifted its development toward a new Cosmos SDK-based network designed for privacy-preserving smart contracts.
Enigma MPC’s SEC filing says it stopped operational work involving ENG and stopped supporting the Enigma Protocol and Enigma Network at the beginning of 2020. It also says Secret Network was not intended to support ENG. Secret Network launched with SCRT as a separate native coin used for gas, staking and governance.
This history is sometimes shortened to “Enigma rebranded to Secret,” but that wording can mislead token holders. The technology, contributors and privacy mission overlapped, yet ENG did not automatically become SCRT in every wallet. Holders had to participate in the separate community swap or use an exchange that supported it during the swap window.
Is the ENG-to-SCRT token swap still open?
No. The community swap opened in June 2020 and burned ENG in exchange for newly issued SCRT. Secret Network governance Proposal 27 scheduled the close and passed in early January 2021 with 99.9% of participating voting power voting yes. The proposal disabled further swap minting and called for the components to be removed in the next network upgrade.
Some exchanges handled the migration for customers—for example, CoinEx documented a one-for-one conversion in December 2020—but those exchange events also ended. Do not send ENG to the historical burn address or an individual who claims to provide a manual conversion. A token being transferable on Ethereum does not mean it can still be redeemed for SCRT.
The Enigma SEC settlement and refund claims
In February 2020, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission found that Enigma raised approximately $45 million by selling 75 million ENG tokens to almost 6,000 purchasers in 2017 and that the offer and sale were unregistered securities transactions. Enigma settled without admitting or denying most findings, consented to a cease-and-desist order and agreed to pay a $500,000 civil penalty.
The settlement also required Enigma to register ENG as a class of securities and operate a claims process for qualifying purchasers who bought from the issuer on or before 11 September 2017. Enigma’s June 2021 annual filing says the claim-form deadline had passed and the company was processing timely claims. Nothing in those filings establishes an open claim route in 2026.
This regulatory claims process was different from the community ENG-to-SCRT swap. One concerned potential repayment in U.S. dollars for qualifying ICO purchasers; the other burned ENG for SCRT. Both windows are closed.
How Secret Network privacy differs from the 2017 Enigma plan
Secret Network brought privacy-preserving smart contracts to mainnet in September 2020. Its current documentation says Secret Contracts have public code binaries but can encrypt their input, output and state. Validators execute protected data inside trusted execution environments, and viewing keys or permits control access to some private application data.
SCRT itself is public by default. Wallet balances, receivers and ordinary SCRT interactions can be visible on-chain. Privacy features come from Secret Contracts and private token standards such as SNIP-20; for example, wrapped sSCRT is designed to hide token amounts and counterparties while revealing that a wallet interacted with the contract. Users should not assume that merely holding or transferring native SCRT makes every activity private.
What should an ENG holder do now?
- Confirm that the asset is the original Ethereum ENG token rather than another project using the ticker.
- Do not use an old swap tutorial or send ENG to a burn address. Proposal 27 closed the minting route in 2021.
- If ENG remains on an exchange, ask that exchange whether it supports withdrawals or has any account-specific migration record. Do not assume it will honour a historical swap.
- Use scrt.network, the official Secret Network documentation and the on-chain governance record for current information.
- Treat unsolicited support messages, recovery forms and “late swap” contracts as scams. Never disclose a seed phrase or private key.
Original September 2017 article (archived)
The following author-written article is preserved for historical context. It describes Enigma’s 2017 plans, not a currently supported protocol or token. Dead Enigma website links have been removed.
Data is one of the most valuable assets we have nowadays. Information on a person’s preferences and habits are highly sought after by companies. It’s a central part of the business of a lot of tech companies. Big names such as Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters have a combined revenue of over 20B USD in part due to their aggregation and monetization of data.
What is Enigma
At its core, Enigma is a decentralized data marketplace. It wants to take the power out of the hands of a few players and return it back to the people. They want to enable people to trade their data in exchange for incentives.
With Enigma, they propose the following advantages:
- More open data will be available for research.
- More people and organizations will reap the benefits of selling and controlling their data.
- Data’s value would become explicit, as opposed to implicit (which is the case today).
- Data sharing could be revolutionized in the same way Bitcoin has revolutionized payments
The protocol will have both on-chain and off-chain transactions. In their words, subscribing to a data source is managed on-chain, including rewards and penalties, which are exchanged using our token. The data itself, its storage and transmission, lives off-chain. In that sense, the blockchain acts as the controller of the network while the off-chain network handles everything else.

In conjunction with the creation of the Enigma data marketplace, they also plan to develop Catalyst. It will run directly on the Enigma protocol and empower users to share and curate data and build profitable, data-driven investment strategies. It is a way of delivering quant trading to the masses, breaking down the massive barriers to entry usually associated with it.
Enigma Hacking
It would be remiss of me in an Enigma article to not mention the hack that happened about two weeks ago. The CEO’s email was compromised, and the hacker used it it to elicit funds from community members in their Slack channel. The oversight has since been fixed and extra precautions were implemented to prevent further cases from happening.

Frequently asked questions
Is Enigma ENG still an active project token?
No. Enigma MPC stopped supporting the Enigma Protocol and Enigma Network in 2020, and ENG has no current Secret Network utility.
Did Enigma become Secret Network?
Secret Network followed Enigma’s privacy work and shared contributors, but it launched as a separate network with a different native coin, SCRT.
Can I still swap ENG for SCRT?
No. Secret Network governance closed the community burn swap in January 2021 through Proposal 27.
Did ENG automatically convert to SCRT?
No. Holders had to use the community swap or a supporting exchange during the historical migration window.
Is SCRT an ERC-20 token?
No. SCRT is the native coin of the Cosmos SDK-based Secret Network. ENG was an ERC-20 token on Ethereum.
Are SCRT transactions private?
Native SCRT is public by default. Secret Contracts and private token standards can protect application data and token-transfer details.
What happened to Enigma Catalyst?
Catalyst was the planned trading-strategy application described in 2017. Enigma later stopped supporting the Enigma Network and its ENG-based products.
What was the SEC action against Enigma?
The SEC found that Enigma’s 2017 ENG offering was an unregistered securities offering. The 2020 settlement included a cease-and-desist order, registration, purchaser claims and a $500,000 penalty.
Can an ICO purchaser file an Enigma refund claim now?
No current claim route was found. Enigma’s June 2021 annual filing says the claims deadline had already passed.
How can I avoid a fake ENG migration?
Do not use old swap domains or burn addresses. Verify current information through Secret Network’s official site, documentation and governance records.
